European Getaways: Our Favorite Fall Escapes to Europe
Once the summer heat has subsided and the high season of tourism has passed, Europe makes for an exciting and relaxing destination during the fall. From Iceland to Spain, here are Tribu’s top six European travel picks for fall 2018—and where each journey may take you.
While an art and history destination for many, Italy is also one of our favorite fall journeys for the combination of food, wine, country and cosmopolitan culture it offers. We recommend experiencing Italy through all of these channels with stops in Florence, Rome, the Tuscan countryside and the coast. Start in Venice, with its more than 100 tiny islands and countless canals, then journey to Florence for a tour of art and local shopping. Finish in Tuscany for an indulgent exploration of food and wine.
Continue to the Italian coast for a stay in the “Five Lands,” or Cinque Terre. This series of waterfront villages each has its own unique qualities and vantage points with quaint restaurants, adventurous hikes and breathtaking views along the Ligurian Sea. Complete the trip with perhaps what might be considered the piece de resistance: Rome. With its famed sites and ruins, traversing the city in fall is a treat filled with new experiences, sights, cuisine and local Italian color.
For the experienced golfer, Ireland is a known destination filled with some of the finest links across the globe. Our version takes you through Ireland’s Championship courses but with our hand-picked stops along the way to ancient castles, luxurious accommodations, theatre, tastings and some of the country’s most charming historic towns.
Traverse Ireland tee by tee, but don’t miss a curated food trail and tipsy tour, with stops in Kinsale, County Cork, Killarney, Waterville, Ballybunion and a secret Ireland experience “through the ages.” This three-part journey involves travel by boat to a private castle and island, chauffeured transport in vintage cars, a sample of local cheeses accompanied by some unusual wildlife and finally to a breathtaking lakeside villa.
Quieter and cooler in the later months, following the peak travel season, Iceland is a highly worthwhile destination in the fall. The Northern Lights first appear in September, with sunny days before cool winter temperatures set in and the days shorten for winter.
Tribu’s recommendations for Iceland include luxury accommodations, along with wildlife viewing via whale watch and puffin tours, a walking tour of Reykjavik, natural highlights from geyser to waterfall, lagoon and volcano; and settling in to a perfect vantage point from which to take in Iceland’s great Northern Lights.
Known for its strong traditions and festivals, Sweden is one of our top fall destinations for its Nordic cuisine, historic architecture, and some unusual opportunities to explore the natural world including some of the area’s 24,000 islands.
Our version of travel to Sweden starts with seeing the sights of Stockholm, and finishes with a luxury tented camp stay with journeys by day via kayak of an exclusive archipelago experience. Evenings spent in the hot tub and sauna add a new level of relaxation to this active adventure through one of Europe’s most fascinating destinations.
With its impressive architecture and history dating back to the 6th Century AD, Croatia also offers vast coastlines along the Adriatic Sea—perfectly situated for fall adventure. Our custom itinerary takes a focus on the outdoors with time spent traversing the Dalmation Coast, Samobor Highlands, Lakes of Plitvice, and the Lost Villages of Hvar, along with food and wine on the Peljesac Peninsula and the “Adriatic Pearl,” city of Dubrovnik. Treks are planned via sea kayak, hike, cycle and mountain bike, for an active take on Croatia by sea and by land.
As one of our top selections for fall travel, Spain can be seen through many lenses. Take a food focus with a custom Tribu itinerary that starts with a Pintxos tour in San Sebastian and continues with a day-long cooking class at a local gastronomic society, including shopping for ingredients in the local market. This journey also includes a visit to a local cheesemaker, wine tasting and dining throughout the Rioja Region and finishes with a visit to Spain’s capital city of Madrid—with a city food tour, of course!
